TALLADEGA, AL -- Darrel Watts is the first winner of the Euro Cup Series. The first race at Talladega was an exciting one as expected and at the end, in a race with only 3 yellows, pit stops were crucial and Darrel showed everyone how it should be done.
Jeroen Anema, doing his first race at NTRL, got the pole and another first time starter, Dan Cable got the outside starting spot. The race had an early yellow on lap 4 when Swedish Leif Nordgren and Dan Cable made contact coming out of turn 2. After that there was a long green run and as the laps went by 2 teams started fighting hard for the lead.
Team SRD International and vMaxSR dominated the fight for the top spots and Caspar Kahari, vMaxSR team leader, led the most laps until green flag pit stops. In lap 24 almost everybody decided to pit. Peo Forsberg and Simon Topham made contact entering the pits and brought the 2nd yellow of the day. At the same time Caspar got a black flag for speeding in pit road. Caspar crew chief was furious with the situation and called his driver "panasca" on the radio (that according to some sources means gay). Caspar didn't like it and decided to park it. He and his crew chief had to be separated by Euro Cup Series officials after that. No comments about this strange incident where made by team vMaxSR at the end of the race.
With vMaxSR leader out team SRD got stronger and charged its way to the front with 4 drivers drafting together and not giving many chances to the competition. Ben Parker led the most laps until the second round of green flag pit stops on lap 44. The 3rd and last yellow of the day came short after when Miguel Gomes blew his engine coming of pit road after a "strange" shift from 3rd to 2nd. Also no comments about this other strange incident were made by vMaxSR after the race. In the restart 4 drivers went away from the field, Ben Parker, Martin Buchan and Darrel Watts of Team SRD and Yosh Yughes of vMaxSR. Yosh tried but was never able to challenge the SRD drivers.
On lap 65 the top 4 drivers went for their final pit stop and with a very fast and smart pit stop, taking no tires, Darrel Watts got out with the lead and a comfortable advantage. Meanwhile Yosh and Martin had both black flags for speeding and had to pit one more times. Darrel was able to keep the comfortable advantage until the end and get the first win of the season. Ben Parker, Martin, Fausto Gomes and Yosh Yughes round up the top 5 in this first race of the season. The team fight was clearly won by Team SRD International with a 1-2-3 finish.
After the intense plate race at Dega Euro Cup Series goes short track racing at Richmond next Monday April 28th for the 2nd race of the season.

, on 27-04-2008 16:15 Grats Darrell on Winning the Season Opener , kept a cool head at the end there to make the escape and good result for the SRD team. Short track racing up next, hopefully a good turnout for that one. |
