HAMPTON, GA - The GTS Cup Series went to the Atlanta Motor Speedway, for the 11th event of this season. With Jim Turner having the series under control, the main interest was the battle for the second place between Yosh Hughes and Paulo Rocha.
The competition was hot, with all drivers very close in lap times. In the qualify, Leif Nordgren was the fastest driver, earning his first pole ever in the series ahead of Yosh and Jim. As the race developed, Yosh showed that his Chevy Monte Carlo #76 was the best car in the track, being able to lead 2/3 of the total amount of laps. Jim Turner, Filipe Caldas and Leif Nordgren were always very close to him, but it seemed always that Yosh had the race under control. But things changed drastically, when Yosh had a moment of distraction, and lost control of his car, leaving Jim in the lead ahead of Leif Nordgren, Paulo Rocha and Filipe Caldas. The last restart came, with 4 cars very close. Jim ewas leading but had to face the 3 WTR Pontiacs that were in his tail. With 2 laps to go, Leif completely failed the restart, almost making his team mates to run over him, that could be a dreadful moment for the WTR team, but with some luck all were able to control their cars. When Jim seemed to have everything to win, Leif started to catch him, and both drivers were really close in the last turn. Leif was facing the possibility of winning his first race ever in the GTS series, and went for it, taking advantage of a slight tragectory error from Jim. Both cars were side by side, in last turn, but Leif was unable to prevent his car to slide up to Jim's tragectory, which made the #6 go to the wall, and spin, leaving the #18 in the first place. The 2nd and 3rd places were for the other two WTR cars of Paulo and Filipe. Jim ended in 4th, ahead of Carlos Caldas, that made another great race, being able to break the track lap record. Jim Turner still leads confortably while Paulo Rocha was able to recover some points to Yosh Hughes, in a battle that doesn't seem to see it's end. The team battle, was won by the WTR Pontiac GTO.R, by a clear margin to the TLP VW Passat. Add as favourites (0) | Views: 148
