RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond International Raceway received for the first time the GTS Cup Series, for the first short track event of this season. Short track action can be very tough, and unforgiven.
Two drivers dominated all the sessions. Jim Turner and Yosh Hughes were the fastest in the wednesday session, but have the company of Paulo Rocha to fight for the practice race win. In the main event, again the #6 and #76 dominated all sessions, with Yosh achieving the pole position, ahead of Leif Nordgren, that surprised Jim Turner in the qualify. Leif was the only driver capable of being close to those two drivers, with the rest of the field battling for a top 5 position. Several engine problems put a couple o cars out of the race. That was the case of the Caldas brothers. Filipe and Carlos, had to park their cars due to blown engines. Others had some bad luck with their pit strategies, being caught in the pits when the cautions appeared. Driver like Paulo Rocha and Rob Mackay, just were put away of the podium battle after loosing several laps to the top guys. JIm and Yosh battled hard for the win, with Leif not far, but Jim was able to defend the first position, while Yosh ended in second. Leif brought his Pontiac to the third place, after a good race. Rob Mackay ended in 4th ahead of Paulo Rocha. After some races out, Rob returned with a good result, while Paulo made his 7th consecutive top 5 this season. The team win was for the WTR Pontiac, only 1 point ahead of the TLP Volkswagen Passat, and 4 points ahead of the AAR BMW M5. Jim Turner is a clear leader, while Yosh Hughes and Paulo Rocha are tied in the second place. In the team championship, WTR is closing the gap on the TLP, with the AAR team not far.
